The Dardanelles Strait and the Gallipoli campaign

British warships were going to sweep the Dardanelles Strait, attacking  Constantinople and drive Turkey out of the war and this would have another three results:

It would open up a sea route to the Russian Front so that Allies could get supplies to Russians.

It would establish a new front.  Allied Troops could march through the Balkans and attack Germany's principal ally, Austria - Hungry.

It would relieve pressure on the Russian forces by drawing troops away from the Russian Front.

 But what happened WAS...

1915, Warships began their assaults

They entered the strait and lost three battle cruisers due to mines and shell fire

Decided to do a land invasion

British, French, Australia and New Zealand troops attacked Helles Beach. Commanders refused aid from the Royal Flying Corps

Turks aware of attack, new German commander Otto Liman von Sanders doubled the defensive forces.

4:00 AM, 25 Th April, troops went ashore and attacked with machine - gun fire.

Getting rid off the Turks could not be achieved and troops were ordered to dig.
